Benefits of Exercise and Physical Activity- Weight Loss AND the Fountain of Youth

Benefits of Exercise and Physical Activity- Weight Loss AND the Fountain of Youth Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to lose weight, feel better, and live longer.  Regular exercise makes us younger and may be the least expensive and most effective of all anti-aging interventions.  It really is the fountain of youth!

Exercise Helps You Live Longer

More than 50 scientific studies have demonstrated that those who exercise regularly live longer than those who don’t exercise.  Middle aged adults that are the most active can expect to live 3-4 more years on average than those who are less active.   Even moderate exercise, (like walking 1.5 miles in 30 minutes 5 days a week) decreases the risk of death by about 25%.  Being more active brings more benefits.  Adding sixty minutes of vigorous exercise to 90 minutes of moderate exercise every week decreases death rates by 50%.

You live longer if you exercise regularly because you lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.  Brisk walking for 60 minutes or more per week decreases heart attacks by 20% and an hour or more of running per week decreases heart attacks by 40%.

Additional benefits of regular exercise include lower risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, and pancreatic cancer.  In addition, exercise lowers your risk of osteoporosis, depression and obesity.  Exercise has also been shown to improve cognitive function (thinking ability) and decrease anxiety.

Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are two of the most important things that you can do to reverse the effects of aging.
