Fiber: A Weight Loss Secret

How Can Fiber Help You Lose Weight?

Eating a diet high in fiber is known to have many health benefits.

A High Fiber Diet:

  • Helps with weight loss.
  • Improves cholesterol.
  • Decreases the risk for diabetes.
  • Decreases the risk for heart disease.
  • Lowers blood pressure.
  • Treats constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, making bowel movements more regular.
  • Decreases the risk for hemorrhoids and diverticular disease.

You May Have Heard of the Other Benefits of a High Fiber Diet, but How Does a High Fiber Diet Help You Lose Weight?

Your weight loss program should include a diet high in fiber.  High fiber foods tend to take longer to chew and digest.  This can decrease the chances of overeating and also make you feel full longer.  High fiber foods also tend to be less calorie dense than low fiber foods.

How Much Fiber Should You Eat?

We recommend 25 to 40 grams of fiber per day for optimal health.  If you don’t eat a high fiber diet now, but want to increase your fiber intake, we would recommend that you increase your fiber slowly over time to avoid causing bloating and excess gas.  Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water will also help.

What is Fiber?

Fiber comes in 2 types:

Insoluble Fiber

  • Helps move material through your digestive track and helps with constipation.  Good sources of insoluble fiber include whole grains, nuts, and vegetables.

Soluble Fiber

  • Helps lower your cholesterol and blood sugar levels.  Good sources of soluble fiber include beans, oats, barley, apples and oranges.
Look for ways to increase your fiber intake by eating a healthy diet with more whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, oatmeal and nuts.  You will be healthier, feel fuller and lose weight!
