It's Not Too Late to Lose Weight and Get Healthier

A fairly common thing we hear from our patients is “If I would have known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself”. We have always emphasized the short term benefits of a healthy lifestyle such as more energy, better sense of well-being, more self-confidence, but now we can even say that you will live longer!
It is true that the earlier in life you start eating a healthy diet, exercising and achieving a healthy weight, the better off you will be. However, evidence suggests that even losing weight when you are middle age will lead to a longer life. Researchers from Harvard published a report in the Annals of Internal Medicine that looked at body mass index (BMI) and mortality in almost 19,000 male Harvard graduates. Although the study certainly had limitations, the biggest one being that only men were evaluated, it is a large number of people with a very long follow-up (over 56 years). Some of their findings are not surprising. Early adulthood obesity led to an almost double risk of heart disease death. Similarly, being obese in the middle years also increases the risk of death from heart disease by about 60%. However, the most interesting finding was that those who were overweight when young but were normal weight in their middle years did not have an increase in heart disease death.
This is an important finding because it adds further evidence that losing weight, even in your middle years, will add years to your life and decrease your risk of heart disease.
So if you are overweight, no matter your age you can improve your life with some simple changes. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by.
