Almost all of us feel better when we are physically active.  Besides the crucial role exercise plays in healthy, permanent weight loss, being physically active provides much more.

Just a few of the benefits of exercise include:

    •    More energy
    •    Better sleep
    •    Better health
    •    Better sex
    •    More self esteem
    •    Improved mental clarity
    •    Less anxiety

Exercise really is the fountain of youth!

Exercise as a Treatment for Depression

Inactivity, depression and chronic health problems commonly go together.  One leads to another and it can be difficult to sort out which one came first.  However the more important question is:  what can you do to avoid the downward spiral of depression, chronic health problems and lack of physical activity?

The good news is there is a solution; and you can start today!

A review published in the Archives of Internal Medicine looked at exercise training as a treatment for depression in those with chronic health issues.  Researchers reviewed 90 studies with over 10,000 subjects that evaluated the effect of exercise training on depression.  They found that exercise significantly reduced depressive symptoms in sedentary patients with chronic medical problems.  The amount of benefit for exercise training was impressive, being similar to other effective therapies for depression.

Depression is a common health care problem and the medications that treat it are some of the most prescribed.  However, an under-recognized and under-prescribed treatment is exercise.  Besides all of the other benefits of exercise, making you feel better may be the most important.  Ask your doctor if exercise is right for you.
