A lot of people swear that their weight loss success is mainly due to a high fiber diet, and they may be right. There are a number of potential reasons fiber may help with weight loss efforts. Fiber may make us feel fuller and therefore eat less. Fiber may also decrease “insulin spikes” that go along with the highly processed carbs that lead to fat deposition. We don’t have all of the answers yet, but it is clear that high fiber foods like whole grains, beans, peas, vegetables and fruits should be part of a healthy diet. New research has even demonstrated that more fiber is associated with longer life, providing more support for the fiber advocates.
A study done by the National Cancer Institute and published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in June 2011 included almost 400,000 men and women ages 51-70 and looked at the association of fiber intake and death. What they found after 9 years of follow-up was that dietary fiber intake significantly lowered the risk of death in both men and women. Heart disease, lung disease and infectious disease deaths were all decreased in men and women that ate more fiber. Interestingly, the source of the fiber also seemed to be important. Dietary fiber from grains had the biggest effect on preventing death.
Here is more evidence to encourage you to get more fiber-rich foods into your diet. The benefits you see may not only be the quality of your life but the quantity too!
