One of the most common concerns we hear from our patients is that their energy is low.  “I’m just tired all the time” or “I don’t have the energy I used to” are common complaints in doctor’s offices everywhere.

Fatigue or lack of energy is one of the toughest complaints for doctors to evaluate.  Because it’s so common and the list of possible causes is huge, it can be hard to decide where to start.  The good news is that most of the time it isn’t disease that is causing lack of energy and the treatment is effective and simple.

The first place to start is your doctor’s office.  Although lack of energy by itself (without other symptoms such as fever, unintentional weight loss, depression or shortness of breath) is rarely due to an underlying medical condition, it’s still important to make sure there isn’t something that is causing your lack of energy.  A discussion with your doctor, a physical exam and some basic blood tests may be all that is needed to reassure yourself and your doctor.

Almost always, lack of energy can be improved with a healthy diet, physical activity and better sleep

Here are some tips to get you back in the game!

           •    If you are not physically active, it’s time to start!  You don’t need to run marathons to get the benefits of regular physical activity.  Even 10 minutes a day will improve your health and your energy level.  Start slow but stick with it.  Sometimes it takes a few weeks for your energy level to improve.
           •    Eat a healthy breakfast.   Your body is a machine that needs fuel to operate most efficiently.  Starting the day off right pays huge benefits throughout the day.
           •    Get some sleep!  Sleep deprivation is very common in our society.  With so much to do, you can find yourself sacrificing sleep to keep up.  Don’t do it!  The price you pay with your hectic schedule is less focus and energy to get things done.  Make sure you get the sleep your body needs.
           •    Stay hydrated.  Staying hydrated seems straightforward, but it’s common to end up at the end of the day and realize you’ve drank nothing but coffee and an energy drink.   Make a plan to keep water near by as much as possible and sip all day long.
           •    Minimize the caffeine.  It’s easy to fall into the caffeine trap.  Because of poor sleep, you need caffeine to get through the day, but the caffeine makes your sleep poor and starts the cycle all over again.  Minimize or eliminate the caffeine or at least keep it to morning hours.
           •    Stay connected.  Keep your social calendar active with friends and family.  If you combine it with some physical activity (like a walking club) or a healthy meal, all the better!
           •    Manage your stress.  None of us have a stress free life.  If it’s unavoidable, look for ways to minimize the effects of stress.  Exercise, yoga, reading or just some time to yourself can re-energize you for life’s challenges.

These are the most common causes of fatigue and low energy that we see in our practice.  Can we help you to increase your energy?
