What is Saw Palmetto?
Saw palmetto (serenoa repens or serenoa serrulata) is an herbal supplement most popular with middle age and older men. It’s best known for its potential treatment of enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). It does not treat prostate cancer and probably has no effect on the PSA (prostate specific antigen) level. PSA is made by cells in the prostate. It is used as a screen test for prostate cancer and to monitor patients with prostate cancer. Saw palmetto may help to shrink down the prostate – this could help with increasing urinary flow and facilitating bladder emptying. It has been used for decades in Europe, and has become more popular in the United States in the last 20 years or so. Saw palmetto has also been suggested as a treatment for male pattern baldness, chronic cough, digestion of foods, and many other uses that have not been well demonstrated in research studies. What are the Potential Side Effects of Saw Palmetto?
Though it is usually well tolerated, side effects include upset stomach, tender breasts and a decrease in sex drive.
