Three Unexpected Secrets to Rev Up Your Metabolism- Really! You have heard over and over, weight loss is calories in minus calories out.  That sounds simple, but we all know it is not.  The calories out is particularly complex.  However, there are several tips you can use to burn more calories and achieve your weight loss goals.

How to Increase your Metabolism

There is a lot of variation in metabolism between individuals.  This is partly genetic; some gain more weight than others eating a similar amount of calories.  However, even if you have a genetic predisposition to a low metabolic rate you can still increase your calories burned with some simple steps.

Here are 3 unexpected ways to increase your metabolic rate.

    •    Resistance training – the best method to burn more calories is to build some muscle.  Some may be reluctant to do resistance training because of fears of “bulking up”.  Others may think that adding muscle when they are trying to lose weight doesn’t make sense.  However, muscle is more metabolically active than fat, so you will burn more calories even when you are sleeping!   Muscle loss results in a lower metabolic rate and is one of the most important reasons people typically regain weight after a large weight loss.  Add resistance training to your workout regimen 2-3 days a week and kick start your weight loss plan.

    •    Get a good night’s sleep – another under recognized, but crucial component of a healthy metabolism is a good night’s sleep.  To work the best, you have to get your rest.  See our article on sleep and weight loss to learn more.

    •    Eat enough (especially breakfast) – this is hard for many to understand.  Extreme weight loss programs may lead to weight loss at first, but those that have tried these fad diets have found that the strategy quits working fairly quickly.  This is because the body goes into a “hibernation” mode, slowing the metabolic rate for protection.  By eating breakfast, not only do you prevent hunger spells later in the morning but you also prevent your body from slowing your metabolism.

Knowing ways to increase your metabolism will keep you on track in achieving your weight loss goals.  What strategies have you used to boost your metabolism?
