Weight Loss Programs: Can Technology Help You Lose Weight?
| Posted on Jan 3, 2012 |
Weight loss programs work. There are many scientific studies that have shown that you can lose weight using a well-designed weight loss program. However, most of these studies have used weight loss programs that have in-person counseling with expert coaches to achieve results. This is great if you have the time and the money to commit to one of these weight loss programs, but what about the rest of us? Technology and Weight Loss
Technology, primarily the internet and mobile devices, has made it much easier to share and track information. The ability to track your weight, steps and food intake then share that information with your friends, family and personal health coach is now possible when it would have been very difficult less than 10 years ago.
But the real question is; can you really lose weight using technology or do you have to have in-person intervention?
Fortunately we now have the answer.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared 3 weight loss programs over a 2 year time period.
• In-person coaching
• Remote coaching (email and phone)
• Standard care (a 1 time visit with a weight loss coach and information on weight loss)
As might be expected, both the In-person Coaching Group and the Remote Coaching Group lost more weight than the Standard Care Group, but the most important finding was that BOTH coaching groups (in-person and “remote”) lost the same amount of weight. Not only did both groups lose weight but they kept it off over 2 years.
This is great news for members of Achieve-Life and for those who want to lose weight in a healthy manner. Technology makes weight loss programs available that are inexpensive AND effective in providing healthy, permanent weight loss.
