What is Pilates?
| Posted on Sep 12, 2011 |
Pilates is an exercise program developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900’s. It focuses on core or postural muscle strength and flexibility. Pilates is a very popular exercise routine with an estimated 11 million people in the United States actively participating. Pilates emphasizes mental focus, spine and pelvic alignment, and purposeful muscle control to develop a mind body connection. Proper breathing technique is especially important. The core muscles (abdomen, hips, buttocks, lower back) receive special emphasis in the Pilates program. Although Pilates is typically done on a mat, several other types of apparatus can be used such as the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Wunda Chair, and the Ladder Barrel. Pilates has been advocated as a therapy for back pain and other musculoskeletal symptoms. While it has been beneficial for many, it is important to have an evaluation from a qualified physician before embarking on Pilates as a therapy for pain.
Pilates can be a fantastic way to diversify your activity program to avoid injuries and overcome boredom. Pilates programs are found at gyms and fitness clubs, pilates studios, and YMCAs. Look for an instructor that is well trained. Certification is common, but doesn’t guarantee a qualified instructor. There are also Pilates programs that can be done at home, although many experts recommend first learning the basics with a qualified instructor.
