What is the Best Diet for Weight Loss?

Best Weight Loss Diet

What is the best weight loss diet?  Is it low fat, low carb, high fat, high carb?  There are thousands of diets, from Atkins to The Zone and seemingly everything in between.  Which one is best for you?  Each diet claims fast and easy weight loss that may sound too good to be true.  With so much information (and misinformation) available to those that want to lose weight, making the right choice can seem impossible.  However, there is a best choice, it is a Mediterranean diet and it is the basis of the Achieve-Life weight loss program.

Low-Carb or Low Fat for Weight Loss?

Despite the claims of many diet plans, medical research suggests that no variation of carbohydrates, fat, or protein is superior to another.  A study by Harvard researchers (and published in the New England Journal of Medicine) randomly assigned overweight adults to 4 types of diets of varying fat, protein and carbohydrate content.  After 2 years, the researchers found that there was no significant difference between the diets and in the amount of weight lost.  We now know there is no magic combination of fats, carbs and protein for weight loss.  This may not be good news for the diet industry, but great news for you!  Now you can tailor your diet to what works best for you.

Mediterranean (and the Achieve-Life Diet) for Weight Loss AND Health

Nonetheless, while the fat, protein, and carb content of your diet may not make much difference for weight loss, there still is a best diet.  When it comes to promoting good health, the diet that has consistently demonstrated benefit is a Mediterranean type diet. It will increase your length of life and decrease your risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

The benefits of a Mediterranean diet have been demonstrated in dozens of research studies.  Other healthy diets such as the Asian diet, the Latin American diet, and the Vegetarian diet share many of the same principles as the Mediterranean diet and these diets form the basis of the Achieve-Life diet.

The principal points of the Mediterranean diet are:

Lots of Plant Food

The healthiest diet is plant based. Vegetables, fruit, whole-grain cereals, beans, and nuts should be the basis of most or all of your meals.

Healthy Fats

Olive oil is the principal source of fat in a Mediterranean diet.  Avoid saturated fats and emphasize poly and mono-unsaturated fats.

Fish and Poultry

Low to moderate amounts of salmon or chicken.

Minimal Red Meat

Eating just 4 oz of red meat a day has been shown to decrease your life span.

Moderate Alcohol Consumption

1 drink for women and 2 drinks a day for men, primarily with meals, is most commonly recommended if you choose to drink alcohol.  It is also crucial to keep in mind the potential negative effects of alcohol consumption.

Regular Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is a necessary part of any healthy life.
